Where we Ate

  1. Le Panier D'Or- Right on the Markt Square. €14 for croquettes aux crevettes and a bier.
  2. Hotel De Tuilerieen- For beers while we awaited Den Dyver's opening.
  3. Den Dyver- Amazing service and three-course lunch with beer pairings for €54. Come with time; lunch was about two hours long.
  4. Laurent Teahouse- Tea and frites for two €14
  5. Bierbrasserie Cambrinus- Over 400 kinds of bier on the menu. I tried Smisje Fiori and Jarrett had Panache (1/2 bier, 1/2 limonade).
  6. Tom's Diner- Jarrett's birthday dinner. €40 for two people with drinks. Very affordable and good!
Things we Did
  1. Toured the Burg, the heart of administrative Bruges, including the Gothic Hall. €2 with a headset.
  2. Visited the Basilica of the Holy Blood (Heilige Bloed Basiliek). Allegedly, there is a vial of Christ’s blood inside that was brought back from the Second Crusade. It’s kept in a silver tabernacle in the church, and carried around the city on Asuncion Day. Free entrance.
  3. Attemped to visit De Halve Maan. It’s the only operating brewery in Bruges, and at €5 a person, you get a tour of the facilities and a glass of bier. Unfortunately, it was closed for renovations while we were in Bruges.
  4. Visited the Church of our Lady to see Michaelangelo’s “Madonna and Child,” his only sculpture to leave Italy during his lifetime. Free entrance.
  5. Biers at Hotel de Tuilerieen. We had no clue this hotel was clearly well-respected based on those who stay there. In a room off the bar, pictures of celebs, dignitaries, and so forth adorned the wall. David Stern, the commissioner of the NBA, stayed there, as had Colin Farrell and Ralph Fiennes, which I can only assume was when they were filming “In Bruges.” Very cool. If the brewery was going to be shut, this was the next best place for an elite drinking experience.
  6. Bierbrasserie Cambrinus, for the over 400 kinds of bier on the menu.
